Helen Levitt was an American photographer born in 1913 and passed away in 2009. From the 1930s, while teaching visual arts, she
photographed children drawing with chalk in the streets of New York. She met Henri-Cartier Bresson in 1935, followed him for a year, and immersed herself in his work. She was also significantly influenced by the American photographer Walker Evans. Her first individual exhibition was set in 1943 at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York. During this first period, she took black and white photos in the street, with children or the African-American community, showing great spontaneity and a social vein. From the 1950s, while continuing to photograph the streets of New York, she switched to color. Her work spanned more than half a century. Several of her photographs appear in the agnès b. collection and are exhibited regularly.
