Short sleeve T-shirt in soft, stretch cotton with artwork by Malick Sidibé for agnès b. Topstitched finishes. Plain back with collector label and artist's name. Measures about 23 inches long.

Born around 1936 in Soloba, Malick Sidibé lived and worked in Bamako,Mali. In 1955 he graduated from the Bamako Arts Institute and worked for the “Photo Service” studio directed by Gérard Guillat, known as “Gégé la Pellicule” who introduced him to photography. In 1957 Sidibé produced his first photo-reportages, before opening the “Malick Studio” on corner 19 of Street no. 30 in Bamako.
Malick Sidibé, generous, full of humor and much admired by the young, was invited to all the parties, to which he imparted a certain cachet. These parties, where gangs who had organized themselves into clubs competed with one other, took place on Sundays along the banks of the Niger River. Here, young people discovered the latest dances from Europe and Cuba, dressed in Western style and tried to outdo one another in elegance. From Malick Sidibé’s black and white photos there emerges a feeling of light-heartedness and spontaneity, a party atmosphere where people are playing, laughing and living it up.
All of his 6 x 6 and 13 x 18 negatives are very well classified and preserved, and constitute an exceptional archive, rich in information about the early years of decolonization. His reportages of the world around him show simple images which are full of authenticity, neither spectacular nor decorative, snapshots of everyday life, family life and people at leisure, where we sense that a game is constantly going on, involving a complicity between the photographer and his subjects who will afterwards buy these souvenir photos. The body of work created since the 1950s and now exhibited throughout the world seems ahead of its time and makes Malick Sidibé a symbolic figure.
His work has been shown since 1995 and was the subject of a monograph by André Magnin published by Editions Scalo (1998). In 2003, he was awarded the International Photography prize by the Hasselblad Foundation. Sidibé died in Bamako in April 2016. -less
